About This Poem

Free as the wind Ode to native American Indians

Oh how I wish
I could set free
the native American Indian
with pride and dignity
taking them back
across the great open plains
to their sacred home
in the lush green vallies
where buffalo are plentiful
and roam
so the Indians can live in peace
one with nature once more
where the eagles soar
setting them free as the wind
wild untameable as a magnificent stallion
running toward the setting sun.

this is so beautiful, Peter. I wonder if you have some ancestors with native american ancestry that make you want to write so compassionately of them. I have just a wee bit of Cherokee in me and have always felt an affinity for that tribe when I hear stories such as the Trail of Tears. I hope to keep seeing you here at Soup. I really like your style!

Hi Debra. Wow, What tribe, I'm fascinated!. I think most people today, have a special place in their heart for your great people. It breaks my heart to think what your people went through. Thank you so much Debra. Would love to know more. Take good care. Best wishes. Pete. P.S. wish I could make your dream come true.
