About This Poem
One Special Thanksgiving
One Special Thanksgiving
It was many years ago but she still remembers vividly to this day
Back in the year of 1996 her and her two boys finally found a home
They had recently spent three long months in shelters to get away
Get away from her abusive marriage and head towards a happy life to call their own
Family abandoned them in time of need which weighed heavenly in her heart
Money was tight and they managed to get help from the United Way
She was determined to give them a healthy life and bring back that spark
The kind that you get when you feel that everything is going to be OK
Well it was Thanksgiving and she tried so hard to hold back those tears
While she prepared the stuffing, turkey and pastries for them to eat
She knew that family would not be visiting them though she prayed for them to be near
The look on her boys’ faces made her sadness more complete
While they began to eat, her hidden tears began to show
Just then her little boy Steven got up from his seat and walked over to a closet quickly
At four years old he managed to pull the Christmas tree box out to cheer her up so
He said, “Mommy, why do we put up the Christmas tree?”
So they did, they decorated that Christmas tree as they sipped on cups of hot cocoa
Life felt comforted at that moment as they gazed at the tree all decorated in such beauty
A memory she will cherish always and forever and never let go-
How beautiful a child can be
This really happened to me when I left my ex in 96. My son Steven decided to cheer me up by pulling out a Christmas tree to take us away from such sadness. To this day, I still cherish that, his heart of gold and my love for him…
