Oh, the Hasty Heart

Oh, the hasty heart,
can you not see the havoc that you wreak?
The proof has lain before you, right from the start,
all the evidence you ever could seek.

Your wishes, your desires, we can't escape,
'what the heart wants' an all too familiar fate;
sometimes our own destinies we wish to shape,
free from the paths that you dictate.

Oh, the hasty heart.

Your own hungers upon us you force,
thrusting us into the fire, emotionally bare;
you show us what you want, telling us our course –
making us want to search for someone who might not be there.

What should we do, to make you cease
your eloquent pleas for someone to be closer to?
Indeed, is there any way at all to decrease
the frequency of your calls to companionship pursue?

Oh, the hasty heart.

To you I struggle, no longer to defer,
my fight in this world, from under your veil to depart;
instead of your orders and longing, just advice I would prefer –
yours, instinctive but yielding, my oh so hasty heart.
