Be Thankful

Be thankful for the planet we live on.
Be thankful for the families we have.
Be thankful for the countries we live in.
Be thankful for the money we earn.

God gave us peace on Earth.
God introduced our moms to our dads.
God gave us many cultures to learn about.
God gives us skills to use wisely.

Be thankful for our special gifts.
Be thankful for rich and poor alike.
Be thankful for the food we eat.
Be thankful for the clothes we wear.

God gave us talents to share with the world.
God cares for the rich and poor;
No more or no less.
God gave us clothes to keep us warm.
God gave us food so we do not starve.

Be thankful for the homes we live in.
Be thankful for the transportation we use.
Be thankful for the children we love.
Be thankful for who we are.

God gives us shelter to keep kids off the streets.
God gives us cars, planes, and trains to get around.
God will soon make these children leaders of the future.
God made you and He made me.
We are the leaders of today.

Thanks ladies. A lot has been happening in my personal life, between work and moving, so I haven't had a chance to write lately. However, I read a poem at a senior staff conference for my caregivers' company, in front of 300 people. Another one of my poems was read by someone else the next day. It was also read at a little league baseball camp where my psychiatrist's son was at. I also wrote a poem for my coworkers last Christmas, which is supposed to be published in Habitat World magazine.

Though I just celebrated my fourth anniversary at Greater Cleveland Habitat for Humanity, I am considered a volunteer. I am contracted and get paid through another organization that helps special needs adults find and keep jobs. Habitat for Humanity, started by former President Jimmy Carter is nationally and internationally known and has been around for over 25 years.

For those who don't know about Habitat for Humanity, they build and/or renovate homes for the less fortunate. In general the homes are reserved for low income families with children, who currently live in substandard housing situations and have NEVER owned their own home before. They must be able to pay off an interest free loan and are required to work a total of at least 500 hours per family on the construction of their own homes. These partner families can also do their hours in our office or ReStore. The ReStore is a cross between Goodwill and Home Depot, where we refurbish and sell donated household items such as appliances and furniture under 10 years old. Habitat is primarily volunteer based with only a handful of regular paid staff.

Update: Haven't heard anything more on the magazine publication yet, but Habitat for Humanity is publishing the poem, "A Place to Call Home", in their annual report within the next month or so.
