The Humble Penny

I remember the humble penny
although not humble when i a child
one could divide it by four farthings
shared with one’s parents then one for me.

Although not humble when i a child
one quarter saved in the old tea pot,
shared with one’s parents then one for me
saving for another rainy day.

One quarter saved in the old tea pot
sitting snug and warm on the mantel,
saving for another rainy day
until the day of dad’s funeral.

Sitting snug and warm on the mantel
one could divide it by four farthings,
until the day of dad’s funeral
I remember the humble penny.

Hi Harry, sorry for the delay in getting to your poem's page. Oh, this poem really moved us both. You brought us into the home, into family life, into loss... so much in this pantoum and wonderfully wrought it was! Thank you for your entry and congrats on the win in our contest, Hugs, Cyndi

I never even knew you could still divide a penny-- I find that pretty cool, Harry. You sure brought some nostalgia with your pantoum, but with that blending of sadness in it-- I did enjoy reading this (and learning something too)-- thank you for passing by my poems with your very touching words, you are so kind to say that. It means so much to me. Thank you.

This is a fantastic example of pantoum poetry, harry. So you could DIVIDE up the penny?? Into farthings, you say? Well, that is certainly a thing of the past. Also, I enjoyed how you called it "the humble penny." I love this.
