About This Poem
Happiness
I wonder what is happiness
And where does it abide?
What does it look like and where is it from
And why does it often hide?
Why can’t I grasp it firmly
Like a sea-shell in my hand?
Why is it so illusive
Despite my best laid plans.
I wonder what is happiness
Once childhood’s come and gone;
I’m trying to see
It’s less about me
Than the color of sky at dawn.
I’m beginning to see
It’s less about me
Than all the people I’ve known;
Since I can recall down life’s hallowed halls
Sweeter than a spring - time rose.
With a long, thorny stem
That sways in the wind
With petals as soft as snow;
Happiness, I’ve seen
Like rainbows and dreams
As fleeting as wind that blows.
