shocking

SHOCKING!!!!!!!!: WHAT? THAT?

Nothing shocks anymore
To trump each other
They go to the extremes of bad taste
The exotic of the past
Is now the mundane of today
To push the boundaries of commonsense
Is the new wanton game

Have our values and attitudes to
Outrage and decency changed?
To shock is to liven up
What a rebellious few
Think is dreary and staid
But is the result of good taste?

Actions we take now do tell
A story to our future
What of our legacy?
Will our avant-garde seem
Nothing but a real shame ?

Critics slam with hyperbolic feeling
Vitriolic fuel which prolongs
A naturally temporary phase

Desperation for fame
Pushes the tactless
To seek increasing ways
To force our senses to
Confront what is best left private

Whether books
Art
Or stage
The people who should know better
Seem hell-bent on defacing decency

Alas nudity no longer
Has any Victorian stigma
And is now left to the
Little boys new to the
Art of silent rebellion
The big guns dig deep
Extending the boundaries
Of moral inhibition

Decency it seems has no unsung heroes
Those who oppose any act
That does make us think
Examine
And analyze our existence in new ways
Are deemed too sensitive for modern life
For they wish to bleach creativity of
Its individuality

To be a rogue is best
To impose any limits seems
To be nothing to rascals
But willful distress
