About This Poem

Grim Reaper

Who are you ~ I ask ?
The grim reaper am I, came the reply.
I say ~ I'm not dying or dead.
So you say, came the reply.

So why have you come this way ?
I am surely not done with my life.
Though I did not hear a reply.

Out of the silence came a voice.

It was not weak ~ it was not low.
And it was not loud ~
I sat up straight as a pin.
Just so I could take it all in.

So you say ~ came the reply again.
And he went on to say ~
Have you not read the news today ?
He said he read it in the headlines,
On this very day ~ was his reply.

There was a car pile- up ,
Down on fourth and maine.
Licence plate read DOA- today.
And I see you sitting in front
Of me ~ on this very day .
So it must be true .
I'm here just for you !

This is certainly very haunting. I kind of hope it doesn't really happen this way. Great creativity

Thanks for your comment on my "Death to Death, I Say" and for directing me here to this eerie poem. I like how the monologue flowed and held me in suspense. Good ending !!

Keep the ole reaper at arms length , slap him back with fingers tenth, till he walks away from you, tell him bugger blue, and living can commence:)

What a haunting piece of work. It's chilling and very well written. It flows. I have a fear of not knowing I'm dead and wondering the earth, a lost soul with no real destination, in limbo. You might think I'm insane but, when I was 10 years old my sisters and I used to see a dark haired girl wandering in our backyard and in the house. It turned out a dark haired girl was killed in an auto accident on her way home. She grew up in that house. I don't think she knew she was dead.

Chilling forecast of that moment we have no say in. Fate takes us by th hand and we go.

Great poetry, I love the twist at the end. It has a darkness to it, but its beautiful in its macabre tone. Very much a 'Poe like poem. Thanks for sharing.

I have always wondered when the time came if I would know if I was dead - you did a great job of describing someone who didn't know. I like how you did it as a conversation - made it more interesting than thoughts alone would have been :)

Rod Serling would be impressed with this if he was still alive. He would probably write an episode of the Twilight Zone based on your work. Good one!
