Times Advances

Upon my tiptoes, I gaze through a window, the window of my mind.
I pull back the curtain, peer from a partially drawn blind.

Before me lay this youthful beauty, perfection in every line,
And standing there beside her was the old keeper of all time.

He swiftly knelt beside her, and stroked her heaving chest,
Carefully caressed every curve, and sagged her gentle breast.

He cast his spell upon her, aging her as if fine wine.
Left some thoughtful wrinkles, added character in each and every line.

Bestowed upon her all that wisdom, more than she had ever known before.
Brought her many pleasures, also heartaches, several score.

Held her tightly about the waist, now broader at the beam.
Added some weight here and there, not as much as it might seem.

He gradually drooped her shoulders; shiny hair now turns to gray.
Faded memories of life's passing parade now help to pass her day.

Her youthful pace is throttle now, her feet shuffle slowly across the floor.
Though still a thing of beauty, that beauty is different than before.

Time for her is now slipping away, slowly heading for life’s stage door.
The journey has left her exhausted, no longer willing to fight the fight, but unwilling to beg for more.

Time had been an exciting lover, but she will not love another day.
She lies prone upon the sheet as Time exits the stage. I watch with amazement as the scene just fades away.

Donald, this is just excellent. Using the illustration of old man time is great. I think this is my favorite: "He swiftly knelt beside her, and stroked her heaving chest, Carefully caressed every curve, and sagged her gentle breast."

You are a fine poet Donald, I don't know why I haven't read you as often. I read this poem a few months back. It reminds me how deep, and precious time is... Sadly, how it just cannot stay.... :-)..LINDA

Thank you sir. You flatter me. I find it rather strange how an idea for a piece such as this just pops into ones head uninvited and lingers there until you write it down.

what a wonderful poem about time. I loved everything about this one. I am so glad Scott 37 referred me to your page, I am off now to read more. I have a poem 'Curtain Call' that is similar in topic but very different in execution. =)

A wonderful write you have penned here, Donald. I. myself am feeling the ravages of old age, and watching how quickly time moves on the older one gets. I guess that this is life, and I've had a good one. Loved your poem my friend....Peter

I will be reading more of your poetry. I have two here ( She Was beautiful ) and ( When We Get Old ). Thanks for sharing. Lucilla

Fine work here! Were you referring to someone you know? Nice rhymes and an unusual take on aging. Our society is basically a youth - oriented one so it is refreshing to see a description of aging such as this one. Thank you for your kind words about my work. Peace &Blessings Matthew Anish

Thanks for your comments Donald and your direction to this poem. You wrote a great poem about the ravages of time and the thing is there is no way we can stick around and avoid the changes. Nice to find you here. Love, Joyce
