CHILDHOOD AT GRANDMA'S

At grandma's we played with
mud
Ate sweets that gave us cavities
And my cousins were my best
buddies
Granny would make pap, white
and soft
Served with wors
(sausages) that made everyone's
mouth water, even mum.

We'd gather around a fire
''making maize magic'' we'd say
As we braai maize and vleis
(meat)
Before the fire dies Gogo
(granny)
Makes her legendary vetkoeks,
A delight to enjoy for days.

Sometimes we' climb the mango
trees
As the thrill intrigued us, for it
was dangerous
The bees would buzz and we
just ran
But Gogo awaited at the kitchen
door
With a belt to give a hiding
But we would cry before she
punishes us
In hopes of dodging the bullet.

At grandma's we grew up.

Sounds like a festive time, Ronny! Your Gogo (love that term:), sounds like a stern one! I'm wondering too, what "pap and Vetkoeks" is. Makes me feel hungry! Love family gatherings, and this one is a gem! Keep well! Mikki

I LOVE this one. And it made me wanting to know what those foods were that you were naming off: the pap, vetkoeks, etc! What language is that? I do not even know! Such a cool poem. Where did you grow up??

I enjoy all foods, you made me hugry to try something new! and ya know what my dad did to me, he liked the fact I had nice straight teeth, and when I went to unwrap the seliephane(plastic from both ends, twisted) he said, "watch out for the candy man...."~ the way he hsaid it I was terrified of the candy man!hahahaha, but only have a craving for certain sweet candies once in awhile, and I devour them! enjoyed your writing this moring. Very nice memories here! I have memories similar to that at my own grandma's house...though the food is very different and no mango trees!...ha! Well done!

Thanks for your comments on my "Bite Me". I love your "Childhood at Grandma's". I, too, spent time with my grandma. She taught me to appreciate many things; including the smell of sunshine on the clothes we hung out to dry. KJ

Beautiful memories of a special grandmother you have shared! It sounds like the islands, maybe Jamaica? Although I don't recognize the cuisine. I'll have to go see where you're from. Love and Blessings, Rhonda
