Don't Blink

Looks at the world with curious eyes
The only purpose is to feed and sleep
Responds happily to gentle touch
Babes don't see the world deep.

Learning to try and succeed
Learning to try and fail
Emitting their first sounds with meaning
Toddlers for the world set sail.

Putting pen to paper and making crooked shapes
That grown ups call words
No worries yet for them to face
Children still free as birds.

Temptations, pressure, worries, and stress
Longing, loss, and first loves
Wondering what is in store for them
Teenagers reach for stars above.

Jobs and children keeping them busy
Responsibilities on their backs
Spouse and friends' loves keeping them strong
Adult's burden only slightly slack.

Looking back at all those years
Of joy and laughter and pain
Elders say don't blink your eyes
Or you'll miss the whole darn thing.
