birds and angels

This morn, my dear, the birds they tried
To sing your songs to me
But in their songs they slowly cried
While striving valiantly
They turned to me with saddened face
And spoke, “dear sir we tried”
Then opening arms with sad embrace
I smiled deep inside
I spoke to them with gentle voice
And struggled to admit
That though their efforts valiant
They’d failed to copy it
Though not a soul or being has
In time, been able to
Imitate your lullabies
As angels try with you
Then they took wing and flew away
While I remained behind
To float on dreams with you my dear
That you’ve handed me with time
Dear birds you cannot understand
What lengths you’ve tried and gone
You’ve tried to mock the cherubim
And sing an angel’s song
