Dead Winter

Autumn's first frost has taken its toll; The rose's red petals have turned hard as coal. The winter approaches with deepening cold; The upcoming season must now kill the old. With the swift wings of death all becomes frozen; This is the hour the end-times have chosen. Lifeless and barren, the land's laid to waste. In order to save it, spring must make haste. Unfortunately, printemps never arrives; Gone are the days where we all survive.

Danny, congratulations on winning with this entry. There is one questionable entry in your second line: The word "shoal" does not fit there. The definition of the word is either a shallow part of a deeper and larger body of water, or a large gathering. Are you sure you don't mean "coal" in that second line?

Somehow we manage - barely - to survive the season I like least but it too has its occasional beauty. Looking at it now, it seems so long and as you say, spring is out of reach.
