am I allowed to smile?
to breathe and eat and live
seems to be too much to ask
but to smile?
can I do that?
What is a smile
if not a reason
not to burden others?
and what is a burden
if it can't be
lightened by a smile?
What is life
if it can't be illuminated
and what is death
if life can't be pleasantly remembered
and what is a hardship
if it can't be overcome
and triumphed over
with a simple smile?
What then is happiness
and by what standard
do we separate joy from pain
and mirth from despair?
What is in living
if it can't be summarized
by a simple smile?
