Wild Fields

Have you ever gazed on fields turned wild
Free, untamed, and fallow
Where the weeds reign unflinching
Exhaling fragrant blooms and countless seeds

Have you ever gazed on fields turned wild
Where erratic winds blow
And mice and winged migrants forage
A land that does not bend to cultivation
Or manufactured lawn
And blackened pavement

Have you ever gazed on fields turned wild
Passed by, forgotten, unused
And yet it inspires
Because it stands unyielding
Without submission
To produce organized space, nourishment, and foundation

Have you ever gazed on fields turned wild
How long has it been
Since you ran unhindered
Through unmanaged grounds of rich foliage
Where decorum does not apply
And spirits unclothe themselves

Have you ever gazed on fields turned wild
And longed to leave this world of paths
To transcend the laws of man
This narrow realm of limits
