Things That Seemed Poetic

Things that seemed poetic were always sad,
though I yearned for sparkle
and my dad's guffaw, which never came.
Familiar things were always drear --
repeated motions in the same old game.
There were only distant glimpses
of budding spring, fleeting views
of daffodils. The strongest
poems dealt me death and dying.
Yet I always hoped, never went under
to gray despair, always dreaming
of a garden of love that we could share.
But those forbidden delights faded
quickly away; the only reality
I understand is the ever-looming
and final one. Nothing's changed.
The strongest poems deal death and dying.

I definitely see where you are coming from with this piece. It's well done, but I am going to take this poem as a challenge. Please keep an eye out in my poetry. I plan on writing a strong piece that has neither death nor dying. It won't change the general idea that the strongest poems do deal with destruction, but perhaps it will inspire others to write of construction.

In one way I agree but in another I don't I think it is all in what you think is strong. I think any poem that makes a person have an emotion is strong. Try one or both of these poems "AWE SHUCKS" or "VEXATION". By the way great job of writing. TLee

I agree with you Leo death and dying are very strong emotions and so are love and hate. Nice meeting you in PS. Thanks for visiting my work. Dalila

Enjoy your glimpses of budding spring and fleetin views of flowers. After all William Wordsworth wrote that "we shall despair not - rather take strength in what remains behind - the splendor in the grass - the glory in the flower". Peace & blessings Matthew Anish

I think it is the fear that brings out the strong emotions and words.......George

Well said...and a deeply emotional poem. I must say I too agree that poetry dealing with death and dying are usually strong. Perhaps because it touches each of us at some point in our lives.

My dear friend, you have wonderfully written this truth that most of us agree consciously or unconsciously because we love emotion. The utmost emotion lies in death of and at the time of dying. I have no words but openly I agree with you because of your finest truth. God bless all. bl

Thank you for visiting my write, SAD, Larry. This is the first time I've read your works and recognize much in the feeling and story. Writing is a powerful tool for releasing emotions, I'm glad for Poetry Soup as a place to express emotions without judgement. Dark side expression is easier for me to relate to and I believe many write from that perspective - the "ever looming and final one" as you state so well.

the only reality I understand is the ever-looming and final one. Nothing's changed----WOAH! Strong stuff sir! Classic Poetry in LIVING motion! Btw....what is Guffaw? A word I have never heard, at least I don't think so...(*now I will hear it constantly, bc that's the way these things work)

Perhaps the strings of death is what pulls at us the tightest. If we have been well loved at least we have the memories to keep us going. Love, vie, thanks Leo for your comment.
