Leaving

The fall of the leaves
and the quiet beauty
of an autumn garden
lend gentle grace
to this day, which has come too soon.

A single blackbird
feasts on the berries
outside your window
and the view from the terrace,
magnificent, as always.

Sunbeams dance around the room
I will miss this peaceful house
its solid walls
its sanctuary
from the weary world.

For today, I leave,
someone else will come
and sit at your table
for coffee at noon
and pleasant company.
