Cortez

Gray hair gelled and combed with care.
Gold chain glimmers in the morning sun.
Yellow, large collar complements
a medallion over tanned skin.

Members Only jacket
a little old, a little grease.
Sleeves delineate more treasure.
A bracelet attached to gnarled hands.

Chrome wheel chair glimmers
in the rare but substantial spring
sun. Where art thou, bus?
Long Johns, sewn short at

what were once knees. Tied
off with sinew. Diesel exhaust wafts.
A roar greets.
Wheel the chair up to the stop.

Air brakes hiss.
Piercing chirp warns passers-by.
Roll on.
And off.
