Dadgumitrefereeism

Football coach Bobby Bowden was never one to cuss
But refs make mistakes and coaches have a right to fuss

“St. Bowden” as he was lovingly called by players
Instilled moral values and hushed all the naysayers

He’d not take God’s name in vain, so he coined dadgumit
It became his trademark, might appear in his obit

If a ref made a bad call, he’d race onto the field
Never said God d*** it, when the ref’s call he appealed

"Dadgumitrefereeism" got his point across
The refs would shy away because Bobby was the boss

Sometimes calls were overturned since Bobby was revered
Short and stout in stature, but the refs still shook in fear

The “Saint” played with God on his side and the refs knew it
Dadgumitrefereeism didn't bother God a bit

I come from a long line of dadgummitters and sports fans. This was a real heart-warmer to read. Thanks for the write and for supporting my contest, Carolyn!

Ah, Carolyn, you talk of one of my all-time favorite coaches. I loved Bobby Bowden and still root for Florida State. One of the others is Joe Paterno of Penn State. Love, Dave

Carolyn, the poem you commented on was February Haiku not Anticipation....I had Anticipation on the brain apparently:)

Love this, Carolyn! lol... Best of luck in the contest! Thanks for the comments on Anticipation, Carolyn:) the soft sprinkles of snow the other day so reminded me of the kind we get here in March (bordering on spring, sorta:) I felt that stirring of earth's fertility as it surely must be right about now. We are at least a month behind you down in the south. Sometimes we're still with snow even in April, depending on what kind of winter we've had! Last year, snow was gone Mid March!

Well i do not know too much about U.S sport, but i guess Coach's and refs all over the world have to deal with the same sort of on field/Court problems, enjoyed this Carolyn. Harry

Paula should give this entry a lot of consideration for the contest. Not only have you coined a great new word, your couplets collectively deliver a great amount of descriptiveness along with fine rhyming.

I don't think the new coach will ever achieve the sainthood Bowden did. There's a commercial for a credit card on TV and Bowden uses his "Dadgumit" in the ad. Funny write!

Carolyn, you sure know how to get the readers attention. Great poem. Regarding your fine comments on my alliterations in the Key of F, I hedged just a bit on that four years, in fact we're married 62 fabulous years and counting. If she keeps doing good I may keep her around. LOL One more thing--I'm still watching for that email explaining how I can see the contest results. Someone told me that I was 5th place on the Taxes poem. I thought I was 1st. How did they find out? jetate@sbcglobal.net
