Saved For Raven

Her daddy’s grave is the oldest,
His name is hard to read.
She knew his stone had corroded
And has brought supplies she’ll need.

Near to him is her young husband.
He had been the next to die.
She used to come here often
Just to sit by his grave and cry.

Next to her daddy is her mother
After twenty-one years alone
Her name shows up clearer and newer
On her side of the stone.

As the years went by the lot filled up,
A beloved young nephew is there.
She reads his age of twenty-three
And thinks that it isn’t fair.

The lot started filling faster
With loved brothers and their wives.
She remembers kneeling with her loved son
And speaking with him of their lives.

And now there’s a grave much newer.
She hadn’t thought she would see this one.
His name is there so clear and bright,
The name of her only son.

She looks down to where she is standing
As she feels the cold wind stir.
RAVEN is chiseled into the rock
At this spot reserved for her.

I had only read a couple of the poems and wanted so badly to enter but...too many things were going on and didn't get to. I knew Constance would have a time selecting her winners. There is a long list of winners here. You should be so proud of your winning poem congratulations Joyce. Love, Carol

I had to take a look at the number one winner of this contest. I see why Constance chose this one to be top of the heap. Reading this one reminded me of a nearby memorial park where a good number of my relatives are laid to rest. I just lost a cousin a few weeks ago, and he is now at this park. This is impressive. Congratulations.

Just wanted to stop by again, Joyce. I've been reading many of the Raven entries as they came in and yours truly stands out. I can't get the ending of it out of my mind. That only happens once in a while with poetry as I read so many poems, but I love this one! It's haunting me now and will be added to my favorites. Love, Carolyn

Oh did a great job in this most difficult contest!! Constance will indeed have a difficult time!

  1. Date: 1/14/2011 3:25:00 AM

This is the second entry to this contest i've read, and Oh Boy Constance will have one hell of a hard time, if the rest of them are like these two. This is wonderful Joyce Absolutly stunning. Harry

Oh, this is positively chilling and magnificent, Joyce. What a brilliant interpretation of the photo. I'm predicting the top spot for this one. I still feel the goosebumps. Many of us can relate to watching the family cemetery plot expand throughout the years, but I never expected the Hitchcock twist at the end. Wow! No luck is needed to win this one. Excellent work! I have a concept in mind but haven't developed it yet. I see the entries are rolling in so perhaps tomorrow. Love, Carolyn
