When the crickets sing in September
My heart smiles as I remember.
Sweet mountain moments of childhood
Of fall time harvest and firewood.
Picking apples then trimming the trees
The buzzing sound of thousands of bees.
Chestnuts and walnuts and musky morning dew
Clearing the garden and canning too.
Fall time bon fire of burning brush
Cold crisp air and the migrating rush.
The old jeep knocking and chain saw buzzing
Pole ax whacking and fire wood stacking.
Beautiful colors everywhere
Dogs barking and running here and there.
The killing frost and first snowflakes
Roasting turky and pies that were baked.
These fond memories are a treasure
Much greater than one can ever measure.
