No Turning Back

Moseying through packed flakes,
He leaves a trail
Twisting and looping
Like a rough mountain road.
With caution he turns to retrace
His trodden path
To get lost again in the
Winding wonder he created.
But he finds the path
Unforgiving in reverse
As he cannot easily move through it;
His steps are slow
And cautious,
Not curious and adventurous
As they had been on the
Original trek.
He twists his face in frustration
And begins to lose his balance
In his own footprints.
He stops after four steps
And looks at his trail
Stretching far beyond the low-rolling
Hills and evergreen trees,
Realizing that he cannot go back
The way he came.
