SOMEONE TO TALK TO

She walks past the coffee shop window
White hair,
Face wreathed in wrinkles-
Seeming somehow lost to the world,
Pursuing another aimless day
Consumed with nothing.

Her eyes light up!
Someone approaches.
A friend,relative,
Greetings of recognition
And smiles all round.
Now animated chatter from the pair
Along with constant change of expression,
Alert,intent.
Listening one to the other.

Then the meeting ends.
Life continues,
Each go seperate ways.
She walks on
White hair
Face wreathed in wrinkles,
Only now shining with LIFE.
Warmed by the brief touch of human contact-
Of having had someone to talk to.

What a touching poem. We should all take time for others, especially old people. Elton

It sure is amazing how a few words, or a simple touch can alter one's day, even life? Just goes to show how our actions (though small) can affect lives-- very thought provoking write for me that is also a beautiful reminder to do something good each day, even if it's just a kind word spoken-- us it might seem like nothing but to others it is the light of their day--really enjoyed this June :) hugs -- nikko :)

So many elderly people out there long for that few minutes of human contact. Someone to take a minute or two out of there busy schedule to share a smile. Beautiful write once again. ;) love Wilma

Sylvia, this moving poem gave me chills. I have always had a special interest in seniors; too many of them lead lonely lives. Just having this one contact made an elderly lady's day. This is wonderful on so many levels and it goes to my faves. Love, Carolyn (someday when you have time, check out my "Disposable Wisdom" poem posted long ago --- I think it will interest you)

Nice free verse, Sylvia. It's amazing how "touching" human contact can be. Have a great weekend.

June, this is so cool. I love the way you repeated the part about her wrinkles and white hair but the second time, it's a face shining with Life. VEry nice. LUv, Andrea

This poem is both beautiful and also so sad. As we age life is so much like you show in the first stanza of your poem. Then someone comes into our life for a minute or two and then our life does continue on its lonely way. For that brief moment we do live again. Thanks for sharing your work with us.
