Bent Universe

We were lyin’ on the grass,
starin’ at the stars;
drinkin’ from a bottle,
eatin’ candy bars.
I said death
was closer than we thought –
that life was a gun
and we were all a single shot.
You told me
there were more lives to come –
the one we were living
wasn’t the first one.
So I asked if
we knew each other before –
if we never really died,
what’d we ever die for?
You said death
was a fulfillment of our vision
to come back new
and apply all our wisdom –
death was graduation;
the classroom was youth;
beauty was an illusion
and scars were proof.
You said death
could never separate our souls –
that we’d always be in love,
maybe just in different roles.
I stared into space
until it started to bend;
I felt your eyes on me
and wished it’d never end.
I heard my heart crying
like a siren,
and knew some angel
had witnessed everything.
I reached out my hand
to run my fingers through your hair;
I caressed the oxygen
as if you were really there.
I made you promise
we would reunite
if I took you for granted,
and took my own life.
I knew I had the wisdom
if I could have another chance,
but I had to regress
in order to advance.
Cuz heaven was never
a place that I’d found,
and I’d been livin’ in Hell
since you weren’t around.
You told me
tears looked like they sounded –
you could shed a million,
but they’d never be counted –
that you can see heaven
if you really want it –
that Hell’s just a day
when time is haunted –
that wisdom doesn’t come
from being selfish –
that help doesn’t arrive
by acting helpless.
I said death
was closer than we thought –
that life was a gun
and we were all a single shot.
