I went deep into the jungle,
Machine guns blasting everywhere;
Somewhere I could hear screams.
Somewhere a brother,son,uncle,dad,
Warrior is going home with a kiss.
Somewhere the night grows teeth.
I had to navigate thousands of miles,
Had to watch for booby traps, &
trip wires, constantly with one finger
On the trigger, one on a grenade;
Hoping the enemy would not force the
Explosion of madness.
There were three visions I had to get home
Safely; One was a future of bright aging
With children & college, and walking the
Bride down the aisle, giving her to some
Pencil pushing punk; Two I had to remember
All those who came ahead of me in blood, and
Self-loathing to make all of it possible.
& lastly I had to get myself to the LZ,
So that eventually these words i keep
Pounding into the world will
Somehow speak volumes
For my Uncle Jr. & Dad
Viet Nam veterans....
