Important

Block after block there is a man.
Outstretched hands
presenting a brown-stained
Starbucks cup.

Steadfast, I must look straight.
Businesslike gait
creating the illusion that
I have somewhere important to go.
A lie.

The air between me and the cup and the hands and the man
compresses in my brain.
Like the air in the cylinder of a diesel engine
right before spontaneous combustion.
My hands silence any loose change.

As I pass, glassy brown eyes ask “what’s up?”
A downdraft washes over me.
I can only respond “not much”
attempting to retract my arrogance.

Gunmetal blue buildings
glare down at me.
My hands remain in my pockets
still gripping the coins.
Cold to the touch.

Powerful poem that leaves the reader to ponder what he or she would do in this situation. Please classify this as free verse--the Soup staff doesn't read poems with I don't know? This one is too good for them to miss. I see you recently joined Poetry Soup. Welcome! I hope you enjoy your time spent with us. Keep up the good writing! Karen

Very intriguing write here....you do a great job of bringing to life your(or fictional) anxiety and mixed feelings upon passing the beggar. Chris.

There is a guy around Thomaston that begs and I found out he gets the money and goes and buys lottery tickets. Most stores have banned him from coming in and begging. I just can't get a tear up for the beggers anymore. I have been had too many times.
