Don't Make Eye Contact

"But Motek, it's Hanukkah!
You MUST be with the FAMILY on HANUKKAH!!"
(Ok Mom, sure Mom, right away Mom, I'll come home)

"Rabbi Grossman DOES do such LOVELY services!
Every Jew in Suffolk County will be there!
Challah Bread! Matza Ball Soup! SONGS on the ACCORDION!"
(Merry, cheery, Hava Nagilla surface tension happiness...)

"Smile everyone, and I'll take a picture!!!"
(CHEESE!!!!)

"Motek... I DO wish you spoke with him already...
I mean, it's been over a YEAR now...notta WORD!
It BREAKS my heart to see you two like this..."
(I'm sorry Mom)

"I mean honest to ELOHIM!!
Brothers should LOVE each other!!!
How can you be so NONCHALANT about this???
Breaks my heart."
(Your answer lies right in front of you Mom,
You just need to know where to look...and where not to)

Wonderful piece, Yoni! This is a little slice of life Typical of family holidays (Mom trying to guilt the children into being good to one another) but unique in it's flavor. I love how you've done this. Congrats for your well earned win! Hugs, Donna

"Motek" must mean daughter or child, or your Jewish name? Or do I GROSSLY mis-interpret? (I'm an old Gentile ya' know) That aside...beautiful dialect poem which truly tells the truth! Go through the same thing with (some) of my family at Christmas!,...no nagging though, everything is formal and strictly prepared (pretend everthing is okay would 'ja please?) Great write, Yoni! - Tim

Yoni, I enjoyed reading this emotional, well written poem. May ELOHIM shine His light of joy upon your heart as all of Judah and all of Christendom (And other's who celebrate the gift(s) given from Heavenly Father to mankind.) bring their hearts together with love and fellowship for one another. May we all be true to ourselves and respectful of our brothers and neighbors as we look into one another's eyes with love and understanding. God bless you, Yoni. Lovingly, Dane Ann

Families try to cast aside differences during holidays and other celebrations, but often the undercurrents remain. Having had some difficulties with my sister, I can understand Motek's reluctance to reach out to his brother. Still, brothers and sisters are all the family we have so I try my darnedest to let the stuff run off my shoulders when my sister goes on the attack. I do love the way you describe your Hanukkah celebration! Very compelling write, Yoni! Much love, Carolyn
