gift from a dead man

strangely enough
it was a gift
from mr. bukowski himself
you see
i didn't learn of it
until today
my birthday
my 35th birthday

until this morning
i have to say
i was feeling quite
miffed about the whole thing
halfway to forty
from my young thirty
which at the time
i was also riled about

upon this morning
the exact morning of
this most wonderful birthday
the birthday of 35
i sat finishing
a book of poetry
by mr. bukowski himself
unknowing his gift to me

i got to the last poem
a poem about life
and the ending of it
then turned the page
read about mr.bukowski
his trade and treasure
then i found it
my gift from him to me

one of those little gifts
unexpectedly
that falls in your lap
the true surprise gifts
that you haven't gotten
since you were six years old
finding that shiny
new bicycle

in bold letters
it went on about
his writing career and
years of novels published
this one in 1971
that one in 1982
but the game of poetry
not until he turned 35

i felt reborn
still a chance
a true birthday
today
a surprise little gift
some wind in my sail
gift from a dead man
thanks, mr. bukowski
