This Day

This day is not like any other day;
It has never been, nor ever will be
Again.
Though pregnant with eternal yesterdays
And touching all tomorrows,
It is all we ever have to hold and make our own
- Those others fore and aft are ghosts,
To which legions this as well shall add itself -
Each new day defines us as we are, complete,
And on some special one
That will not announce itself
And look like any other,
We shall walk with it to where there are days no more,
Into that Undiscovered Country.

- So spurn no day as inconsequent;
It brought its gifts or griefs to you,
Subtle or profound, to carry or reject.
Seize each day, they are the prayerbeads
On the rosary of your life;
And walk close with them
Into each one's sacred sunset.

    "Seize each day, they are the prayerbeads", this is wonderful! I enjoyed this poem for many reasons, but mostly because it is a needed reminder for us to not waste time in trivialities, nor to look past opportunities to enrich the lives of others. Well done, William, you are quickly rising to the top of my list of favorites! Donna

    How right you are, William! We are well advised to make the most of all of the time we have. My father lived every day to the fullest and surely he had no regrets when he passed away earlier this year. Love the comparison of days to the beads on "the rosary of your life." Uplifting, magnificent poetry! Love, carolyn
