Black Life (a version)

malt infused
young brother, jam on it
like we used to
      can you remember
max julien and pimp prints
stretched across polyester shoulders
looking immense
from my location on the ground floor
of the uprising
      photographs had sepia tones
even back then
damn grandma
was you ever young
like me?
       black like me?
or just that washed out grey
with the white house
in the distance
forever looming
like a living reminder
of nightmares
that don't always wait
for rest
       just waiting for the rest
             of us
