I question the tale of your sorrow
and your never-ending pain
written indelibly in your hollow eyes
speaking of your tribulations
Where have you walked from?
Your shoes are worn…with holes
Your feet must be blistered from the miles
the many roads you have traveled
What brought you to this street corner?
You appear so old and frail
My heart is just afraid you cannot withstand
the cold this small town sees at night….
I watch as you grasp a sign saying
“we all have bad times now and then
and any help will be appreciated”
and watch your drooped and stooped shoulders
and I cannot help but tear up
at your sad plight and wonder….
I just wonder why?
Where will you lay down your head tonight?
As you grasp the money we hand you
with trembling hands
and say in a humbled voice
“God bless you”
my soul is on fire from the pain
and I want to give you a warm bed
and be assured that you are safe
Money is just not enough….
but we barely make it ourselves
and I have a child to feed….
Where are the ones who love you?
Are you all alone?
As I drive on I cannot help but cry
tears of red sorrow
and pray for justice and peace
and hope for you
What else do I have?
I watch you fade into the distance
in my rearview and still the tears are there
falling….a lake in my front seat….
How many more are there just like you?
Homeless on the streets
cold and so alone…..
