My nocturnal friend

I have a companion, who visits each night
The time she first came was such a delight

She woke me up with her wonderful sound
I went to my terrace and looked all around

When I couldn’t see her, I thought maybe a ghost
Then I suddenly saw her up high on a post

She rotated her head on that glorious neck
And locked her sight on a faraway speck

On silent wings she took to the sky
I could feel the draught as she passed close by

I wasn’t sure which way she flew
And felt quite sad as she faded from view

Until, there in the starlight, she rose with a vole
To return to the forest and her nesting hole

Now, my nights would not be the same
If my strigiform friend never came

Wow, Nigel, such a beautiful tribute to the winged creatures who make our hearts sing. Sometimes, poets' rhymes seem forced; not so with this great work! Carolyn

Excellent couplet Nigel, sounds like an owl nestling by. I had an owl at my telephone pole about a week ago, I thought it was lovely the way it sang through the night, until I saw it feasting on one of my kittens. I’ve chased it off two times now. Great work...Raul
