This cold, forlorn, haunting night
Gazed upon me with blackest eyes
Glistening above, stars so bright
Thought I to myself, wished my demise
Dare I commit this sinful deed?
Would not reason begin to heed?
Alas! To my fate I soon resigned,
Cursed be the stars that so designed
What lurks within, I cannot tell
In this heart of mine- evil doth dwell
Heart and soul in endless strife
Would that it all end with the touch of a knife!
Blasphemy! Blasphemy! Thou dost blaspheme!
Enraged soul thus doth scream!
Heart beats quicken, sweat doth pour
On my brow – a curse on me forevermore!
Save thyself! Do not succumb!
Said my soul before ‘twas struck dumb.
Eerie silence – blissful and bleak
Pervaded my spirit, dying and weak
Eyes closing, senses failing –
Hardly could I hold on to the railing!
Death was coming – Hark! It comes for me!
As I lie down and surrender to the quiet sea
