Linsey-Woolsey

No one else sleeps
where I lay my head.
My empty bed.
My nest.
My safety zone of rest.
I’m such a child at times,
to be so grown
and sleeping alone
doesn’t seem to be
the thing that I see
in the future for a girl like me.
I am- -I seem to say
in my head of course as I lay
buried in the feather tick
with Gram’s linsey- woolsey
still so warm and thick
pressed against my cheek.
Sometime’s I think
I smell her hair and
while lying there
just for a moment --
a single moment
I do feel her with me.
Oh, I hope she can see
how much I miss her.
She was and she felt
the feelings that stir
and needle and pelt
the inner me as I melt
from the child who clings
to the old self while the new rises.

Inspired by the portrait--"sleeping child"

:D Well, I think you're going to enjoy that the artist, Stephanie Deshpande, has blogged about this contest and has posted the winners' list on her site AND there is a direct link to all the winning poems. So... others who appreciate her art, will see this poem! How cool is this? Here is a link to her blog page.http://www.stephaniedeshpande.com/contemporary-free-rhyme-poetry-contest/ Also, I put up a new blog about this.. I think this is a Soup first. I'm still stunned in the most delighted way

Always Charles, you put a creative spin on the thoughts that inspire you and a slice of life that is real as well! This has love and comfort and loss and birth all wrapped together.

Congrats, Charles! Yes, I did very much enjoy this one... love the ...umm?... character/feel of the Linsey Woolsey. It is a detail like this which brings a necessary intimacy to a poem, that element of show/tell which we've discussed in the past (a shared view.) Also, I tend to instinctively rhyme the last two lines. I really liked that you DID NOT (though there is a nice play with melt/ self... soo good). Lovely arrangement as well.
