She is deep in thought but not about anything too sad. Maybe she is reflecting on something that happened earlier that day.I'd call her Bethany and maybe have her be thinking of a person she wishes were with her that day. Her love is far away and she is pining for him!

Nutmeg nickered, a comforting sound that brought her a moment's peace. Why now? Why meet the man of her dreams just as she was facing her greatest nightmare? The brain tumour was growing, her sight failing and night seemed closer than ever. The horse shifted, as though sensing her change in mood and leaned closer, protectively. Toads croaked behind them, and the smell of wood smoke reminded her of her grandfather's pipe, stories that traveled well best bedtimes. Cole would have liked her grandfather, his robald laugh and quick wit. But then again, Cole liked everyone. Cole. Oh, why now? Why not, the creek seemed to whisper. It was only one date. Didn't she deserve a moment's happiness? Laurel listened to dusk falling, slowly, so slowly. How many sunsets remained? She mounted Nutmeg and they took the scenic path home. It was only as she turned the corner that she discovered she was wrong. Flames lit the sky. Her cabin was on fire. Oh, God, where was Jodi?
