Bogus Entries in Contests

Blog Posted:7/19/2014 6:46:00 AM

Every contest I sponsor, I get two or three bogus entries, usually shortly after the contest is opened.
I'm curious if these folks are entering their poem in multiple contests, possibly without reading the rules?
Here are the titles and first line:

Girls, flowers, and rivers - Mohammad Abedin

Form: Light Poetry

Every girl is like a flower

The scent of WATER - Madhavi Suyog Pagare

Form: Classicism

Beating the Rhythm against my Eyes,

How many of you hosting a contest have received these entries also?

BTW, I wish PS would not allow you to put the same poem in multiple open contests.

I find I get 5 or so in each contest Roy that have nothing to do with the contest subject and are never dated hugs

Dear Roy, Sometimes we all received poems that are "off topic" for contests. It's a shame, because I've actually received some beautifully-written poems that didn't meet any of the contest requirements. Don't know why this happens. Take care, Carolyn

I don't think there has ever been a rule about using 1 poem in more than 1 contest? What would be wrong with that if it fulfilled the rules for both contests.

Point already conceded below.

Roy it is a constant problem, but I do not agree with you about entering the same poem into multiple contests, if the poem fits the requirements then go ahead....It is also very interesting how one judge may love your work and the next one does not like it as much...

I see your point, but it's something I personally never do, as I almost always write a new poem specifically for each contest. Some folks are trying to get input from other judges, so that's good. I wish there were an online judging form that could be used as part of the judging process. Subjectivity cannot be eliminated, but it could be reduced.

I always get at least one or two totally unrelated to the theme. It's small enough number that I don't sweat it. Just click the not accept key.

PS. Those same people put unrelated poetry in my contests too. If it doesn't fit I ignore it... Perhaps there is a language barrier or they are desperate for some one to read their work... That's why I put up the first contest about your favorite poems... So the newer members (and older) could find a place to show their work. Since many write but the contests have become too VERY narrow for most entrees. My poems never fit any where either. I know the feeling. A few more open contests would help the newer members.

In my contests I have received explicit sexual abuse poems. Usually 3 very offensive poems each time. They of course have nothing to do with childrens and fun upbeat poems. I would like to have a way to block these or have them labeled as what they are... Three people need more therapy... and their poems are offensive to read.

I agree with Roy, we simply don't need these people!

You could shame them in a blog...

In my dream Soup, there would be a reply button to the contests entrants. We get a poem, we get to send back a "blind" reply. We don't know who sent the poem, just we get to acknowledge receipt of the poem and attach a note, say of 100 characters max? Something like: Please check spelling or Thank you. Received for the haiku contest but it is a sonnet. Or, Thank you for supporting my contest. Or, Please check syllables. Or, you have posted this to the wrong contest. Please check the contest board and your poem. etc etc...

I will be blogging about contests soon, too, Roy. I have no idea why this is done. I think, personally, they need to get rid of the stupid points system. Some want those "points" Uh? A-wa? Some just think that they have written the best thing under the sun and believe it is worthy of scholarly study. What is your contest, again, and is there anyway that in some "minute" fashion these poems might meet even one of your criteria?

I agree with removing the points system. I think it drives unhealthy behavior, at least to some small degree.

My contest is for iambic pentameter poems only and must include a scansion of the poem. Not even in the ballpark.
