Incredible List of 100 Books to Read in Your Lifetime - Roy Jerden's Blog

Incredible because I can't believe this crap.

Supposedly based on books written in the past 200 years, which means 1814 and later.

Compiled by the Amazon.com editors, who I think have to be GenX'ers, based on the lopsided inclusion of more recent books. Also somewhat self-serving as, with the exception of "Great Expectations" and "Pride and Prejudice" (maybe others) they are all books still in copyright and hence books that Amazon can sell you (you can download many classics for free). But even considering these criteria, the list is notable for what ISN'T on it. Where is "Roots" for example? No Mark Twain? No "Moby Dick"?

The only book of poetry is "Where the Sidewalk Ends" by Shel Silverstein !!!

Very interesting list-- I've only read a handful of these books, & a bunch of those would be when I was a kid and yes, so many other titles that one would expect to be here, but then again it would be so hard to choose just 100 books & it all still depends on the reader's preferences-- you are right though, how they could have a hidden agenda in posting this list. Have to say though, what struck me with this list was how it covered age-groups-- couldn't help but smile at that, I love Eric Carle!!-- maybe that's why they said "lifetime" --start 'em young with reading is what I say (last night, my 8-yr old nephew slept over & I normally read to them or tell an interactive story so it just warmed my heart to see him get 1 book of mine, "Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes" by Eleanor Coerr and he said it was the 1st book he read with no pictures on it (ok, at first he thought it had no pictures, but it had a few-- still I looked so silly, just staring at him the entire time, pouring over those pages, just proud of him, happy that a book captured his attention, long enough for him to finish it)-- I wonder if anybody remembers Beverly Cleary's Ramona-- "D.E.A.R" -- Drop Everything And Read! Well of course that was one I read since I rarely read these days unless it is the KING.I bet Book Thief is a wonderful one to read because the movie is stellar.
