Deeper poetry

Now this doesn't apply to all, but I wish I could see more poems that weren't straight forward.  I loved to read old poems and try to figure out what they mean.  I started to write poems that had hidden meanings in them and were kind of like riddles, and at the end of them I would say, "what does this mean?"  but no one ever answered.  If you would like to see the poems I am talking about, they are called Voiceless and The Voices Left Behind.  They both use war as a psuedo-cover, but they are not talking about war, so try to figure it out and tell me what you think.  So for the 3 or 4 people who read this, I am counting on you.  And let me know if you come up with any like also, I would love to read them.

i love writing stuff that holds the attention of the audience to the end.. I also love writng straight forward things too, but sometimes it is needed cory

LOL see whatcha started now you must tell us what you wanted us to see! I hope Charles sees this he wants folks to see what he's trying to tell THEM...LOL I just want them to get SOMETHING out of the verse, I don't care if they don't exactly get me? I wrote my life story and someone commented it was an unusal take on the life of our lord ;) [give my born cross was showing]

Hey, Chris, just returned from seeing your poem. I do not think that was nearly as ambiguous as some poems I've read. It had a lot of thought put into it. When I discussed ambigous poetry earlier, I meant that super obscure kind that uses very weird language that one needs to be a genious to figure out. I enjoyed your poem and I will try to read more of your work!

it seems you spoke of conflict in your voices left behind, chris... i am one whose style is IMPLICIT that a reader needs a second look or read to get an interpretion.. saying the "unsayable" is to me " de riguer." somehow, i do give a reader a sense of action or feeling without the cumbersomeness of exposition. it's like seeing a car wreck on the highway; you see the drama but have no idea how it happened or who the people are who are directly involved uet find the symbolism of the theme after savoring it for a while.. and your said poems depict such as well.. nice!.. thanks too for appreciating my piece in your contest.. chris, that was ssaying the unsayable, lol! :) hugggs

I too, read your Voices Left Behind, and after reading what Carolyn has said, I tend to agree with her, on it's possible meaning? I do enjoy poetry, that makes me ponder, however if I try to write in puzzle pieces, it usually doesn't get much feedback, or positive response. Perhaps I'm not very good at it, however, I truly appreciate the writers who do it so well. Debbie named a few of the excellent poets who do, and she should include herself. Yours too, among those gifted. oh, and ps...many thanks for my placement in your lyric contest! Much fun to do!!

I just read "The Voices Left Behind" and found it very moving, Chris. It sounds like a custody battle between divorcing parents to me -- children caught in the middle with no shield, these are the true victims of divorce. I can see where many would interpret this as the Civil War and in a way divorce IS a civil war of a different kind, Chris. I would also like to thank you for my placement in your contest. I had written another poem on Daniel's drowning a while back and it was not "straight forward." You really made my day. I still miss him. Love, Carolyn Love, Carolyn

Chris, I am just peeking on here right now. Will try to check out your poem later. If I read a poem that is very obscure, it makes me actually kind of depressed. I want to understand things; otherwise, I will only read the poems of an obscure poet when I can understand enough to reply to him. I am one who rather enjoys the straighforward stuff. There is a magazine called LUCIDITY,which I love because it publishes all kinds of poetry , whether it be free verse or rhymed but the requirement is that it NOT be a puzzle. Not to say I do not enjoy symbolism, analogies, metaphors, personification, and great imagery. I like those kinds of poems the best, but I want them to not be a big pain to figure out. So I see people at Soup gravitating to the types of poets that write in the style they enjoy. Probably I do not get many comments from you on my poetry. That's ok. We like what we like, and that is how it should be! Luv, Andrea

Light poetry and poetry about nature and family are the primary topics here, one gets discouraged if they write layered verse with depth and more than one meaning, most of these types of write are Free Verse and it generates little comment, I for one write 1) because I have an emotional need to and 2) to be read. Chris A., nette, nikko, james Goff, john heck, drake e., Charles Henderson and a few others write deep thought provoking work try these authors I will go read these for you. Light & Love

ok I just read your "The Voices Left Behind", and I hope I got it right, if not I would love to know what the hidden meaning is-- and as for your other write, Voiceless-- can you help out and leave the url for it here on your blog? The search thing here Sucks. I can't seem to find it? & it doesn't come up? I could be blind though....

Hi Chris! I love having hidden meanings in poems! I sometimes do that too, in a way though that I would be the only one who could truly understand it? But it sure is very interesting to know how others interpret those poems-- I will check out the poems that you mentioned here and tell you what I think :D -- Very interesting blog and thoughts!

I would love to see deeper writings that really make you think...sometimes people don't want to take the time to read them, but for the ones that do it is amazing to see how many points of view can come from one set of words. That's what it's all about anyway...we are all different...and understand and analyze everything differently. Very good spice of life.
