<P>I've been writing Lanternes lately.&nbsp; I have been surprised at how it is possible to express a lot in such a short, terse, and formal structure.&nbsp; It was a number of poets here at Poetry Soup that demonstrated to me the Lanterne's potential.&nbsp; Many thanks.</P> <P>I've been trying to track down some of the history of the Lanterne, but I haven't had much luck.&nbsp; So I'm asking soupers if they know how it got started.&nbsp; Was there a particular poet who got it off the ground in the way that Crapsey started the Cinquain?&nbsp; Or are its origins more nebulous?</P>

Thanks Karen and Brian for the feedback. Most poetry forms don't have a specific beginning. The sonnet arose out of Italian folk song and has no specific founder. It feels to me that the idea of the Lanterne just happened in a number of places at the same time.

One other point Jim about the lanterne and perhaps the reason for its popularity is that is a 'half cinquain' and thus perhaps has' ridden on the back ' of the increased awareness of that form in the past decade or so.Rgds Brian

The origins are obscure Jim other than its shape when presented in a centred pattern, are in the shape of a Japanese lanterne.I would guess it developed a following on the internet and it has grown from there.I came across it in 2004 and it has became a favourite form of mine.Technically it is a worthy complement to a haiku or tanka. There doesn't seem to be a lot of information around regarding the form. I have been writing them for awhile but like you I haven't had much luck finding out much about the origin of it. Karen
