Poetry for the Wee Ones

Blog Posted:10/23/2016 11:43:00 AM

Thanks to the generosity of our friend Tom Arnone I've found myself in a position to purchase a couple of poetry books for my two girls which will be the first such books that either will receive and I want to get it right - so thought I'd reach out to you all for input:

For Lily (my 8 year old in Albuquerque) I was thinking 'Where the Sidewalk Ends' - I remember loving it long ago and think she's old enough to appreciate and enjoy it.

But for Ava (the 4 year old here in Texas - I'm a Garcia, we reproduce a lot, don't judge) - I have no idea. Dr. Seuss is fun and all but I want something that's more of a compilation similar Sidewalk but nothing comes to mind.

Any suggestions for Ava or thoughts on my choice for Lily would be greatly appreciated.  Many thanks in advance!

Phil

I have a couple of poems for children, I'd gladly let you use, Phillip. You may have more than you can handle, but let us know if you would like us to Soup mail or poems, or send them some other way! Good luck !!

wow, how nice of Tom!! all I know is that as a child I adored Nancy Drew books and I loved the Little House on the Prairie stories, but that's for when they are tweens!!!

Daniel, I did not realize Phillip was collecting children poems from US. Is that true, Phillip? I have at least five to ten that would work! Google Nancy Drew. If she were aging by "real time" she would probably be older than Barbie doll!

I thought Nancy Drew was the lady on CNN who does all the frivolous tabloid stories? Maybe that's Nancy Grace, I'll now sit and ponder this for the next 30 minutes

Andrea, How many children's poems have you written? I know you would get a kick out of being part of a special book put together by Phillip for his daughter, written by all of his friends in the soup.

You can't go wrong with a Silverstein book. Or Suess ! If you were wanting your children to learn old classics, my own first book of poetry was Robert Lewis Stevenson "A Child's Garden of Verses". And it is still a best seller. Also Julie Andrews has published some of her own poems in some beautiful books for children. A collection of "Songs and Lullabies", and "A Treasury For All Seasons"

I would probably need to learn the old classics first before giving them to her. My historical timeline of famous poets looks something like this- first Shakespeare then Seuss then Silverstein plus whoever wrote the Amelia Bedalia books: )

Mrs Carrie, you are so talented, I know you can write a children's poem. Wouldn't it be great to be a part of a one of a kind project for Phillip's little girl? I think it would be a gas. I'll bet you've already written one.
Date: 10/23/2016 1:53:00 PM
You know, Phillip. I think if you could get everybody on this site, to write or donate a children's poem. I'm certain you could print them off and have a wonderful original book of children's poems and limericks. There are so many gifted poets on this site. I would donate "Little Gray Pirates" for a starter. I think it's a good children's poem. If everybody gave one, it wouldn't take long and you would have a wonderful book for Ava. Obviously the authors name would go with the poem. It would be a little work but worth it. Just a thought.

Children's poems was really what got me started posting on the soup. The longer I stay, the farther away I've gone. I need to go back to the beginning. It was really fun then.

Great, Seeker, all he needs is at least one from everybody. So 1 from you and 1 from me makes two already.

That is an awesome awesome idea. I love it. I'm not sure how to go about asking for such things from folks but if I can figure out a tasteful way to do so I will. Can you imagine getting a compilation with so many uniquely voiced talents from the likes of yourself and Jan and the other wonderful writers here at such a young age - it'd be a brilliant illustration to a growing child that so long as you speak in your own true voice that's true to your passion you can always create beauty in the world.

I would totally love that idea! My daughter is getting a poem published in a book from a contest held at school, it would be so cute to see all the little ones and their talents :) great idea :)

What a lovely gesture from Tom :-) I have no idea what to suggest as (shock horror) I never read poetry to my son just did nursery rhymes and children's stories. Maybe the souper's who have little girls would give you the best advice:-) hugs Jan xx

hmmm...where the sidewalk ends is perfect in my opinion! It was my first fave book as a child. There's also A Light In The Attic by Silverstein. My daughter is 10 and still reads these two books. Dr. Seuss is a great idea too. I think you are on the right path with this one! have fun and good luck! :)-luloo

I forgot about A Light in the Attic! Geez my brain these days... Maybe Silverstein is the way to go for both. You can always grow into poetry but the real magic is learning that you never have to fear outgrowing it
