Bowie High student places third in poetry competition -- Gazette.Net
A Bowie High School student placed third in a state poetry competition after winning her grade, school and county level competitions. Aquilah Nelson , a junior, placed third at the Poetry Out Loud state competition where the winner, Akash Menon of Frederick County will represent Maryland in the competition’s finals.

Lawrence High School senior heads to national Poetry Out Loud championship
Natasha Vargas, an 18-year-old senior, won the 2014 Poetry Out Loud state championships, beating nine other finalists at the end of the yearlong contest presented by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. Vargas won $200 and the opportunity to go to Washington, D.C., next month to represent New Jersey in the final round of the national recitation contest.

Poetry Out Loud

Poetry Out Loud is recesitation poetry which can feature a broad range of voices, styles, cultural traditions, and approaches to writing and performance.

The Poetry Out Loud: Recitation Contest was created in 2006 by the National Endowment for the Arts and The Poetry Foundation. The contest was created to increase awareness in the art of performing poetry, with substantial cash prizes being awarded to schools that participated as well as representatives from each of the fifty states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
