I WAS ME

First I was me,

Selfish as can be,

Wanting everything from A to Z

And wanting it all for me.

Then I became we,

A part of an us.

I learned to share, give and take

I learned how to trust.

Next I was you,

Believe me it's true.

I would rather give than receive,

It was you I wanted to please.

Now I am them,

A family man.

Giving my children,

All that I can.

If you look real close,

It is easy to see,

I am older and wiser,

And no longer a me.

Poetry on Facebook
Blog Posted:2/15/2013 2:35:00 PM

Hello Soup-Mates,

I have recently created a Facebook Page where I have started to post many of my poems.  My hope is to reach more than just other poets - although I do not have many followers at this time.

I notice a number of you who I have befriended on FB post your poems directly to your wall, but I thought I would share with you some of my experiences with a Page.  The Facebook Page features comes with tracking statistics that show you how many people have viewed each posting.  You can also see where your followers and page viewers come from with other profile information.  I think this is a neat way to see the exposure that your poems are getting.

Also, by posting to your wall, your poems get mixed in with other status posts and other things from other people. By putting your poems on a Page, you group all the poems together and people can easily scan through your entire portfolio - or as many as they choose.  When other people post to your page - it appears in a side window.  You can approve the post to appear on the Wall or keep it in the "Posts by Others" box to keep clutter off of your page.

And, everytime someone "likes", "shares", or posts a comment on you poem, their friends can see the link as well which can also help give more exposure to your poems.  I have had my page up for a little over one month.  Of the 58 people that follow me, 48 are friends of mine and 10 are complete strangers that found my page on their own.  I would like more, but I am trying to be patient and understand that poetry isn't for everybody.

If you want to take a look at my Page as an example of what you can do - although you will not be able to see the tracking statistics - you can follow this link: https://www.facebook.com/poemsbyjoe    (If the link does not take you to the Page, you can do a search on "Poems, Lyrics and Stuff by an Average Joe" - open the one under "Pages" - this is also a Group - but the Group feature is not as flexible as the Page feature.)

If you "Like" the page, that would be great - but, no pressure.  Just check it out so see if it is something you might want to do.

Joe

Thank you. I will have a look at your page and Like. :-)...I have a fb separate from my "personal" fb, Water Dance. I post some of my poems which relate to a post, eg discussing new publishing tools, writing forums, poetry as a teaching tool, etc. I use it as an extension of the blogs here and as an advertising tool for my various websites, which are divided into their defining functions. Posting poetry or other works on a public forum such as fb, there is the real risk of copyright ownership, which facebook define as belonging to fb as soon as you post anything on their pages. This is a matter which I have covered in a post on Water Dance some time ago. See you on my page as well :-).

Andrea and David, it is really quite simple. If you open any Page in FB - mine, for example - you will see a blue, "Create Page" box in the upper right-hand corner. Simply click on that box and follow the instructions that FB provides. Once you have establlished your page - you need 30 Fans or 30 "Reached" to turn on the tracking tools.

I like your response to Craig. If the FBI wants to use MY stuff, they can have it. It's the only way I might ever get famous (or maybe infamous?). hahaha. also will have to check out this stuff you told us sometime.

The primary thing I don't like about facebook however is that they can use anything you post there anyway they want without regard that it's yours---it's part of the agreement it would take a lawyer to read---and the privacy there is questionable even after you customize it--which is why I got off many years ago.

Sorry, but I beg to differ, Joe. Once you post to facebook, you relinquish your copyright to THEM. This has been defined in a court case not so long ago (which I had covered on my fb Water Dance page early last year). Love, Su

Craig, I understand your concern on this. However, you maintain the copyright rights to anything you create. I am not too concerned over FB using my poems elsewhere. It is expoure I am seeking after all, so if the fols at FB want to help me achieve that end - all the better.

I see you posted a message at the bottom on helping David to set up a page. Maybe you could copy and paste your explanation to him and send it to ME? Nice blog, Joe.

Joe I do not understand pages and how you get people to read your stuff on Facebook. I once put up a link on my main page that takes you to a very attractive website where my poems are shown with other poets. Nobody I know has ever seen it or cared to click on my link. I have seen poets show poems on FB and they are lucky to get even a few comments when they do. I don't know how you and others get so many hits on FB. I guess you have some really great friends!! anyway, FB is not my bag, but maybe one day I will understand it all!!
