The Cane

cleaning out the closet is never fun
trying to separate past memories
with things you feel you need to keep
for whatever reason
here is your walking cane
what will I do with this
you carried it for several years
just to keep your balance
it was so much more than an aid
to enable you to walk with ease
the cane leaves its mark
it was your signature in life
to keep your gait steady and true
not one of the oldies but one too young
to lean on a stick to get around
when you were taken to the edge
only to slip and fall
you will never have it all
even in silence you speak
in spite of all I hear your thoughts
but do not misplace what matters
to see inside your eyes
pain breathing daily
out of reach to those who
look upon your strife with pity
all people walk different
so do not lose sight
when all comes crashing down
we all use crutches
