Success or Failure? - Nigel Fawcett's Blog

<p>Not living our dreams; not doing things; and, not trying things, is often tied up with our fear of failure, but whether we see ourselves as successful or as failures has little to do with our actual performance because it is rooted in our beliefs, particularly our self belief.</p><p>At some point in our lives, something happens that causes us to believe we are not good at something, for example, a destructively critical comment to a child.</p><p>From that point on, we reinforce our “failure belief” every time something happens that seems to support it, and we simply dismiss any successes as just good luck.</p><p>Conversely, the person who believes they are good at something sees every seeming success as further evidence of their skill and ignores failures as bad luck.</p><p><strong><em>Yet, in both cases the number of successes or failures may have been the same!</em></strong></br></p>

Vince Suzadail Jr. Date: 12/3/2008 7:06:00 PM I believe people's fear of success is just as detrimental as a fear of failure. Many subconciously sabotage their success due to fear. It's neither success or failure that hamper us, it's fear. Also different people define success differently. One might sell his soul for gold and consider it success while someone else would consider this dismal. Perception of what you believe success is, is as important as the accomplishments. If my goal in life is to be president and I become a congressman (God Forbid), I might say I failed while actually being very successful in the eyes of others. My Dad raised five kids working in a grocery store. I find that more successful than a multiple married, no permanent relationship movie star. Me, I just enjoy every freakin' moment. What we think, what we say, what we believe, comes to BE. these thoughts/words/dreams grow, and take on life, just as negative thoughts/words do...it is all about what we put out, for that is what we get back. Sharon Winter Date: 12/3/2008 12:36:00 PM Once again Nigel, I feel that is only partly true. Fear of failure is definitely a huge part, for many of us not living our dreams, but for me, personally, it is not my number one reason. However, your other point is well taken. Your example about the child is huge, as comments to a child I do believe affect them forever. Confidence and belief in oneself is essential for personal success/happiness.
