Hello to the Poetry Soup Community

My name is Woodrow Lucas and I was born in Columbia, Maryland.  I am married to the most wonderful woman in the world, Machel, and I have a 14 year old daughter, Autumn and a 4 year old, Gabrielle.  I have a master's degree in Theology and a Masters in Business Administration and work as an analyst.  I often tell people that I am an analyst by trade but a preacher and writer by vocation.

I love poetry man!!  I mean I love it.  I also write fiction and have published two books, one entitled A Book of Rhythm and one entitled Insane Joy.  I encourage encourage anyone who is interested to check out my website at www.woodrowlucas.com and/or my blog website at www.thejesusparadigm.com.  Some of my favorite poets include but are not limited to: Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, Amiri Baraka, Pope John Paul II, Gwendelen Brooks, Owen Dodsen, Edgar Allen Poe, Allen Ginsberg, and poetry soup poets Sue Mason, Mary 'Duhart, and Vince Suzazil (ok this brother's last name is a bit difficult to spell so bear with me.)  I used to read poetry a lot before getting diagnosed with Schizoaffective in 2001.  After diagnosis, I have limited my reading to "must read" material.  But through God's grace and a lot of prayer (some of which came from folks on poetry soup)  I am reading great poetry again.

Some of my favorite prose writers include but are not limited to:  James Baldwin, Goerge Orwell, Charles Dickens, bell hooks, Toni Morrison, Alexander Dumas, WEB Dubois, Jane Austin, William Julius Wilson, and Cornell West, all of whom I believe walked in the prophetic for most of their lives.  I believe that there is a strong connection between music and poetry, so some of my favorite musicians include but are not limited to: Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Common Sense, The Gritz, Tupac, John Coltraine, Eric Clapton, The Doors, Beethoven, and Kanye West all of whom I believe also either walked or walk in the prophetic.

Most of my poetry either has a religious (Christian Universalist) or Social Justice tone, but as I read some of my old stuff, I am hoping to experiment with some lighter and more "everyday" subjects.  I feel like Poetry Soup is another sort of place of sanctuary for those with the prophetic gift who often find it hard to discover their place in this world.  But that is another Bio altogether....

Thanks mucho,

Wood
