An Angel Smiled At Me

An angel smiled at me today,
I almost passed her by.
A tiny little slip-of-a-thing, swallowed by an oversized coat,
Face hidden by wind-tossed hair.

I wasn't thinking of whose she was,
Only that I was running late, vaguely annoyed at "whatever".
Unaware of passing lives also trapped in their own isolations.

Then I heard her laugh, freely, contagiously, the way I used to.

Fleeting resentment passed through my mind,
That I'd noticed. That I wanted to stop.
For a brief moment I was reminded of summer days, of climbing trees
And skinned knees.
Running through sprinklers and warm seas.
Memories made me stop and turn...

There she was.
Not more than six. Slipping between people who took no notice,
As if she was the mailbox on the corner.
Caught in her own sidewalk world of make-believe.
Chasing an unseen rainbow... and then she caught me watching.
Undisturbed, her face burst into a happy grin as laughter bubbled forth,
Her eyes glowing like Christmas morning.
Pushing the hair away that would not stay still, pausing in her solitary game.
That single moment when we took each other in seemed like lifetimes.
Something inside me quietly burst free.

I continued on my way, but the day seemed brighter.
Nothing had outwardly changed;  I was still late, but I had the curious urge to skip to the corner;
To roll down a grassy hill and play hide and seek.
At the corner I turned just to see if she was still there,
To send her a silent thanks.
As if she heard, she turned... and an angel smiled at me, again.

Take Me There

Where are you walking to
Do you know the road you're on?
Does an unknown voice guide your steps
Or do the hands of angels
Pull you forward

Take me there,
To a place I've never been
See sights I've never seen
Colors brighter, winds are warmer
Let me walk with you
As burdens just fall away
Sweet innocence instead of fear
Take me there.

It was your hand I held
Guiding me this far
If not for your eyes,
I would have missed these footsteps,
The ones that hold my feet so lovingly
Someday this path
Will meet again with yours
And I can't wait...

Take me there, never to walk alone
Never again to search for
a place to call home
Take me there,
Strong against the winds that blow
Catch a rainbow
After storms have cleared the air
Take me there

Whisper directions in my ear
On faith, I will follow anywhere
As gentle hands pull me on
Ready, I whisper
Take me there

And She Sings

For Emily, gone much too soon

There was a little bird, of an ordinary kind
Neither special or flashy, she didn't seem to mind
Didn't heed the cries of others, she had beautiful treasures to find
She never graced a gilded cage, she hadn't needed taming
Just a breath of acceptance, at ease with freedom since her naming
While some scoffed as rules she scorned,
still others thought she needed harsher words

Until she began to sing,
witness the heavenly sound
As forest hushed and trees boughed down
Feather and fur lifted as it rose and turned
A simple symphony never before heard.

In her song she can be anywhere,
inside you heart or the clear blue sky
On dancing waves, or in a newborn's cry
Echoing off the mountain tops,
Clouds part, and time just stops.

And she sings...
For the memories she won't be a part
Sending gentle reminders to be kind
Love each other, forgive the rest
A melody that won't be repressed
At early dawn or twilight fade
We will hear her sing from the nest she made.

And she sings...
Of sadness, loss, and darker days,
Of moving on and rainbow rays
Of grief, and heartache, and learning to fall
She sings of love, and life, and standing tall.

And she sings...
Lifting her golden wings, takes off for the sky
And still, we hear her, as she sings to us goodbye.

Persistent

There's something inside that just won't quit
A voice in your head "you're not there yet"
Unbound to dying dark or birthing light
Refusing excuses or forgetting's delight
The path reappears after deliberate detours
As if to say you've been here before
And here you'll be, again, and again, and again
Where Self resides and soul's reclaim
Nature's gift wrapped inside
Precious notes singing your spirit's name
Echoes remembered from ages past
Side glimpses caught in shadowed glass
Lasting impressions color each cautious step
Spaces "just between" hold back curtains of regret
With bated breath, eager eyes and open ears
As voice released, letting go useless fears
One last wailing of painful sharps
Reveals harmony buried in persistent hearts.

September 11

Yesterday she was just like any other little girl
Passing notes, soccer camp, the borders of her world
Protectors there with easy smiles
Mommy's scent, Daddy's hand
Unspoken courage for each new mile.

Where does she find that courage now
As her world collapses and she asks how?
"Who will pick me up, take me home?"
Who will hold her close, yet let her grow
Mommy and Daddy went to work for just a while
Now it's forever
How do you explain this to a child?

Yesterday he was just like a million other boys
Pokemon, video games life's simple joys
Batman, the coolest hero of them all
Now a bedroom altar is a blank, bare wall
Just the picture of Dad at the station
Receiving a nightly whispered vow
"Dad, you're my hero now".

Thrust beyond his years, forced to say goodbye
A childhood shattered, and he asks why?
"Who will go to the game, teach me how to drive"
" You said it would be OK Dad. Why'd you have to die?"
"Mom cries a lot, cause Dad you're away awhile"
How do you explain this to a child?

Giants crumble as birds fall from the sky
Frightened eyes look upward unsure if heaven will reply
Dazed, shaken, blood and tears forever flow
For the innocence of a nation lost
Freedom, Freedom
We never fully understood the cost
We never knew, never paid the price
As terror now sits on our doorstep
Look both ways and think twice
How much we took for granted
How cheaply we valued life
And...

Where does she find her courage now
As her world collapses and she asks how?
Where will he find his hero now
His childhood shattered and he cries "How?"
How do we...
Heal a wound that cannot be bound
Lift hearts beyond now sacred ground
How do we, can we...
Raise hopeful wings under falling tears
Restore their innocence, erase their fears
Let hatred's circle quickly disappear
How do we heal the children
So sweet, so fragile
How do we...
Should we...
Can we ever...
Oh, why do we have to
Explain this to a child.

Lay Me Down

Crystal eyes that reflect but never see
Heart of glass, warm but frozen still
Unspoken cries of a child unseen
Spirit untouched
Taken hostage by an iron will
Unmasked for a season
Danced outside a flowered wall
Followed time unchecked
To dwell within the chill of an early fall.

If here I lay me down
Among the hail, on frozen ground
Silver shards to pierce my heart
Let fortunes cloak float away
Hands entwined in tortured prayer
Follow me home, angels waiting there.

A teardrop falls, a single trace
Of soul untouched
Left behind as the battle soared
For life, for time
Frantic hands try any door.

If here I lay me down
Let tears soften unforgiving ground
Awashed in light
Lift opened eyes and hands unbound
Heated hearts swiftly melt
This prayer was felt,
Followed me here,
Angels hover, ever near.

Dare To Dream

Shutters they hide your eyes
Laughter, a distant song
Gone is the beguiling grin
How is it possible, yet we knew all along
There was no escape, heaven couldn't last
Caution to the wind, angels flying past
Whispered "Dare to dream"

Lovers don't choose, they only feel
Ensnared or enchanted
They sing and dance, then weep
To win, to lose, it's all the same
Curse fate to hell, shielded in love's name
Left to die, hearts awaken at last
Defying dead desires, angels flying past
Shouting "Dare to dream!"

Tired greys transformed electric blue
Hearts beating fast push fire through veins
Purple hazed with need, reluctant
But dazed by sudden greed
Tempting touches, violence tamed
Shredding at perfect beauty braved
Bodies melded, witness the innocence craved

Love denied, mourn the cost
Wrap me in anguish
At least I know what it is I lost
Cancel the celebration, then rejoice
Grief has no color
If love was not the choice
Heal my heart with tears of blue and green
Lifted on angels wings
I Dared to Dream.

Oh My Child

Sad eyes without words
Listening to the silence
As it bounces off the walls
My heart hears all you never say
And hopes this message makes it through
Oh my child

From the first time your fingers
Curled around mine
A love I had never known
Became my air
My greatest strength, my weakest will
Would lay the world at you feet
If only I could
Oh my child

To nurture, a mother's gift
To be helpless as the growing pains begin,
The harshest curse
Oh to lift the burden of innocence
And still bathe you in its smell
Powder fresh and chocolate kissed,
Oh my child

There's so much I can't tell you
Too many dangers, I can only warn you
Be strong and know I love the person your are
Whatever sky looks down when you close your eyes
I'll always be there
Drying tears and runny noses
Savoring and forgiving the thorns
As the world receives my roses
Oh my children,
I love you.

With You

I want to watch a sunrise with you
To see new light as it breaks thru the night
To feel the earth breathe as shadows scatter
As each new color seeps over the sky
And we in breathless wonder, sigh

I want to watch the moon rise with you
As the fire of day sets down her flames
Mother bird tucks in her babes
Earth’s lullaby awakens sleeping souls
Against twilight’s blackening cloak

I want to swim in the sea with you
To fall into water’s womb cradled in love
Lifted on birthing waves, tossed upon sun-warmed sands
Salt kissed skin calming trembling hands

Climb a mountain, sail a sea
Love’s naked beauty re-gifting possibilities
Grace endowed to those who believe
Easing our pain, open hearts love receives
Grasp a silver moment, your hand in mine
Sorrows mantle lifted, love-soft eyes collide
Sunrise, sunset, mated souls now entwined

Sands

A simple life an ordinary life
Complicated by a fractured heart
Unfinished, barely begun
Waiting for the green light
Too late for forgiveness to start
Mistaken path for a lonely soul
Misdirection, the one way to become whole
Hot tears can't reclaim the space
Kneeling, unflinching, Face
Darkness that must be borne
Before revealing a countenance of grace
Voices echo from far away
Beseeching merciful hands
As life fades inside itself
Grasp a soul slipping under
Shifting sands.
