The Distrest Poet

I have a penchant for paintings of poets.  Did you ever wonder what to write next...like the poet subject in this painting?   In an undersized, dismal upper room, a stale poet scratches his head and fixes his gaze, as though in anticipation of inspiration.  Nearby, his supportive wife darns a worn garment and is surprised by an unexpected, debt-collecting milkmaid who enters their space demanding payment from the poor couple.  The scene was probably inspired by Alexander Pope’s satirical poem The Dunciad, published in three different versions at different times.

I absolutely love these paintings of poets you have found. I thank you for the explanations and for sharing them with us. The poets themselves seem to be captured so well. And I just have to add, Fred's comment totally cracked me up. Thanks Caryl. Love, Shar

This artform I can relate to too well. Only the debt collector wouldn't dare walk through my door, so they call me on the phone. J/K I am turning one of my rooms into poetry. I hope to find artwork such as this to set it off. Not only do I find it beatitful, but it also defines a poet even more. Cheers, Lana
