True Artists Do Not Play Games

Dear Soupers,

 Do you think that soup members or nonmember should post a picture of someone else in
their slot when deep down he or she knows that it is someone else?  If you do not wish to be identified, I believe that you should not post a photo at all.

We don't post pictures we post avatars. An avatar can be any graphic representation of us that we choose to make, for what ever reason. It's purpose is to give the comment an identification, not necessarily identifying our true selves, but identifying the person or personna we want to project here on the soup. It means nothing more than that and anyone who reads more into it is on the site looking for more than poetry and friends. I would add that unless one wishes to project a person of confusion and flippant intent, the avatar should always be the same so as to give some stability to the identity and perceived personality of the owner. The avatar is not important in itself, and is only a part of the larger total picture of us. It's a fancy burger dot. It doesn't determine whether we are liked or not. Our total presence on the soup determines who we are, including our blogs, comments and poetry.

I don t think anyone should post somebody elses photo without their permission.That s stealing ideentity unless its somebody like bart simpson or william shakespeare : ) I guess they wouldn t mind..Interesting blog.

Nobody should be using another person's picture as an avatar unless by permission. But of course famous movies stars and singers , I don't think it matters so much. Those feel like "public domain" to me. Everyone knows them and realizes you are just using their picture out of admiration. Not sure why this is important to you. I am curious also if someone put their picture with one of your poems or something that made you angry? I think it's funny when people use a photo maybe 50 years younger than their picture today & I see people commenting to them as if they are still young. My pic. is now 4 years old. if I ever figure out how to change it, I will have to put up a more current one!

I found someone else's photo on one of my poems which was posted at another site. I was a bit ticked that someone would post a picture on my poem. At first I thought it was funny but actually it is not. First i do not even know how to post a picture and I am not great with computers so my son does a lot for me. I am me and only me is what you see. love phyl

it really doesn't bother me one way or the other, but then, I have enough trouble uploading one picture, being technologically dense! some people are shy about publicly posting their photo, whilst others like posting pics for fun, and a nice pic of flowers etc. looks more interesting and attractive than a blank space...

if someone felt the urge to impersonate me I'd take it as a compliment! and it could be handy - if I misbehaved I could say 'twas the other person :) I've got a real life double, never mind online, and she's a prolific shoplifter, now THAT has caused me a few probs!

Yes you are right. Would you happy if open a website and find your picture on that page and someone else impersonating you? Its not like you are using the picture for commentary or other purpose. Through that picture you are telling the person you are that person.

Christine, this is a very interesting question. I've gotten some comments about my constant avatar changing and some of the pics that I post. I try to take it in stride. This is who I am. For me, the avatar is what you project about yourself at that moment in time. I change constantly because my moods constantly change. There are deeper issues involved with this avatar thingy which people with some background in psychology would pick up on. Enough said. Only recently have people brought security issues to mind. This is a public domain. Everyone knows that so u do what makes you feel comfortable. Like actors, poets sometimes need anonymity. To each his own.Interesting blog.Thanks for sharing.
