I don't know the first thing about writing poetry other than it speaks what is in my soul. I am here to learn from you! If anyone has anything to share about form or make suggestions about my writing, I am receptive. I hope to make many new friends here.

I started writing here in October even though I signed up almost 6 months earlier. I didn't know any forms and have learned so much and have made a number of friends. I am sure you will enjoy your visits.

rachel . I gathered from a comment you left me today that you really didn't know how things worked here with making replies, etc. It IS kind of tricky!! I have to remember when I first came here how difficult it was for me to catch on. I am not computer savvy and a few friends helped me out so much. now I feel like I know a lot of things here but I am still learning even now with all the new features they keep adding. good luck here. I hope you get it all figured out.

hi Rachel have tried the list on the left and not the top one in blue that doesn't seem to work but the one on the left hand side under contest does. And comment need not be anything you are not comfortable with, some are eloquent others just say a few words, all are acceptable and appreciated. Never place a hurtful comment and if you don't like something it is better not to comment on it, just move on to another poem or poet xx

Thanks. I finally found it and have spent the afternoon reading the poems. There are a lot of really great poets on here. Thanks for your help.

I'm still trying to figure the site out. I have gone in to read poems from other people and have made some comments. At this point, it is difficult for me to say much beyond. It is beautiful or I like it because I do not know much about poetry. I'm trying to learn though! I really wanted to be able to read the other entries into the contests, but I haven't figured out how to do that yet. The contest winners page does not seem to be working. Is anyone else having this problem? Some of the poems I just uploaded were older ones I had. I decided to put them up there, but I know that they need work. I just bought the Book of Forms, so hopefully that will help.

Hi Rachel my ten pence worth is, you should start by asking yourself why your first poem got almost 600 hits which in itself is very unusual then your shoelace poem got 500 hits and the rest didn't, is it possibly because lots of people commented on those poems but you did not reciprocate, just a thought, if you need any help I and lots of poets here are very willing to help you...David

PART 2 Having learnt a few basics Rachel trying others styles who wrote in the shorter vein( eg Adelaide Crapsey for American cinquains) is also a good way to experiment to eventually arrive at your own poetic style.Your unique poetic 'dna' will then gradually evolve naturally.Rgds Brian

Welcome Rachel to the best website for poetry on the web.Like most things learn a few basic in shorter poetic form style ie couplets, quatrains, before trying longer forms sonnets etc .Don't try so-called 'free verse' until you have grasped the basics.PS here, has many good examples of the basics of short poetry forms(see Terms/Forms link above) and is a good place to start along with Wikipedia ,where the Poetry analysis page would be a good easy access background to our art.Like a baby start with small 'steps' but one word of advice from an old-timer here, keep away from the 'non-poetry blogs' on PS Rgds Brian (from the class of May 2007)

Andrea gave you good advice, someone posted a blog a short time ago asking for comments on her work, best way to get comments is to give them, she has never commented on any of my works and I had probably never seen hers either. Time is limited etc. Entering contests is also a good way to spread your poetic wings and dive into different forms, but DO read All the rules, sponsors like me get P.O.'d big time when they aren't followed. at the end of a poem you can always post " constructive criticism welcome".... Anyway , Welcome Rachel , I hope you will love it here

continuing..... most people won't say anything critical in a comment, but if you want to ask specific people for criticism, you should do it inside a soupmail, and some will oblige you. I hope you are commenting to others; otherwise, you won't get many comments. you are too good to be missed. Welcome to soup. I am a lover of "forms" so if you ever have questions on them, you can just click on my soup bowl and pop me a question. Oh, one other thing. If you post a few poems a day, there is better chance you will see responses to your poetry than if you post a lot of poems all at once. Hope to see you around! (oh, and one more thing: check out the contests. they can really inspire you to write!!)

oh, dang, you decided not to sign up for soupmail then?? Well, I will tell you at your blog since you want to learn a few things. I think you are a good writer. I noticed no comments on the two poems I visited and both were great poems. to make friends here, you just need to visit other poets' poetry. Once you have left a number of comments, you will start to see these poets commenting back to you and reading your poetry. Even if you just did ten a day, you would probably have at least half of them respond back to you. Premium members are often the most responsive. They can become great friends! if you want suggestions on your poems, You need to have soupmail.
