The Hardest Gift

I didn’t give enough gifts
I’ve said
Never meaning this one
Just those that showed small insight
And let you know my heart
Useful things, things of beauty plus words of truth and impact
Emotion manifested in acts
Simple gifts

Tell me what you want
I directed
Be clear, don’t talk in ciphers
I will do as you ask
True, I actually thought, until
Its full meaning came clear and focused leaving me
Standing far, mostly silenced, in the dark
By request

To give freedom and space
I’m learning
Is beyond merely hard
My soul unloads its pain, my heart wails no
My brain screams fight, and I fail as
Your heart finds gifts similar to those here for you
Which now have nowhere to go and fill
Empty space

Shattered By My Own Hand

My heart remains shattered
I didn’t fall in love with a girl
Rather, I sort of sauntered into it
But, eventually, there I was
Not all in until too late
Now not allowed where I want to go
She showed me one day a drawing of her with her heart on the floor
For what I’d done to her
I was, after all, taken by another with a different life
And could not be everything to her
Or with her
So today I am not allowed to know her
Though I look from a distance and see
This man who has given her what I didn't
And I can only sit here and love her
Wanting her life to be full of joy
I did it all to me
So I expect no sympathy
Even though
My heart remains shattered

Better

Kinder than me, You are
                   Unaware of your own power.
Smarter Sweeter Faster, That too
Is You & You & You.
This plus more leads to, The opportunity
To hate a rival's unknown charm.
No solace for the self, This realization
I helped your heart prepare to hold that other love.
So much knowledge I have, but still
Want to know you Better (and Better).

Stronger than me, You are
                  Living life in another's arms.
Laughing Talking Loving. These are
                   Shining shreds for my memory.
But my chest never there, For you
To lean against watching a story unfold.
The smell of garlic given no chance, To glide
Across a shared room awakening your senses.
My hands don't get to create, A meal
Over which you and two boys smile.

Warmer than me, You are
Tuned closer to the inner worlds of others.
Decent Concerned Caring, That too
Is You & You & You.
Psychic strengths confounding things, At times
Creating questions where none really exist.
Pressure leads to pushback, A rare
Sense of anger in the intensity of words.
In the face of it still, This unquenched
Desire to know you Better (and Better still).

Sillier than me, You are
Blessed with a quick burst of laughter.
Goofy Funny Connected, Traits that
               Generate smiles warmth and memories.
Humanity's breadth again captured, In you
Brought to life on a daily basis.
This unconscious part of you, Expressing an
Exultation in this life infectious in nature.
A smile whose dimensions of joy, Adds more
To mundane moments than others do to times of ecstasy.

Humbler than me, You are
              Unwilling to grasp your exceptionality.
Achiever Engaged Dedicated, Also true
That its You & You & You.
Rejecting words professing these realities, Not apprehending
The metamorphosis from the girl once in that skin.
Now an uncommon woman, Wrestling with
Your emotional potency, intellectual strength and physical beauty.
All of which foment this Desire, Seeking chances
To delight in any opportunity to know you Better (even Better).

Change

The intensity of each morning has no place
But its hard to persuade my mind of that
In a world where you’re a given
And before was just time nothing but time

Good morning two simple words just like good night
Things I love to say to you and hear back
Those words and the other three are stilled
As its all impossible

But who’s to say ultimately what is impossible
And what must merely await its day
Because the sure thing is the world spins
And every day brings a change

In even everything sometimes

Funny Has Lots of Meanings

Love is a funny thing
And being in love is funnier still
Every memory, Each kiss and embrace
                                            Lingers
Many things small and large make you
Words and deeds, thoughts and actions
Your eyes and smile with all they contain remain
                                             Irresistible
Midnight doesn’t last forever
Dark gives way to the inexorable force of light
In daylight a heart breaks free to soar but can still
                                             Ache

Grace- Lesson From a Lover

Perhaps it was just that we floated into reverie Maybe not though because it felt more like discovery Hard now to look in the still not empty vessel As you have found a new star to orbit A new soul with which to wrestle And to live with in a love that looks to feel euphoric. Still it remains too soon to call us old Every time you wandered off your return just seemed foretold With new joy to live when you came strolling back to see me Until you burst free of that gravity stretched beyond its limits My heart you taught so well finds it all so weighty But beats its simple rhythm smiling through a grimace. If there is a single lesson that this, too short, long year taught me Lyrics, poetry, magic and cosmic messages have themselves a simple key Their sense and logic get revealed at the times we want it to Awake today staring off into pure dark space Delivers a completely different view One must be thankful for every moment lived inside a state of grace.

Late

It remains a mystery
How to manage the real physical pain
Announcing itself from inside, punching at the soul
Brain and body responding to the ineffable nature of life’s complexity.

Precisely because of you
Life cannot ever look the same
From germination--first coffee, a car ride, lunch
Cocktails, a kiss--Now lives something of uncertain form or substance.

Holding tightly this gift
Offered to us by unknown angels
(Unless a joke, designed by scheming spirits
Laughing, making the timing wrong then wrong still and wrong again)

The idea still baffles
That somehow I became a choice
You really wanted, and then embraced so fully
Joyfully I basked, without understanding the reality, late to grasp truth

In time fighting less
Wrestling with rigid notions long held
Holding me away from the open path before us
Intensity and wonder producing a radiant beacon in a dark world

Torn bleeding and raw
Heartfelt salve available to repair the injuries
Not knowing if arriving late to the fullness of Love
Precludes tending healable wounds while a new heart stakes its claim

Secret Life

That third life we each live

There alongside our public and private ones
The secret life

You came into it on a freight train of building emotion
Slowly, powerfully, but constantly accelerating
Momentum building energy and force

Until
To fruition

Holding its own demise and rebirth
Time and again
As if a train on an unstable track

One moment
Cars cascading past each other down an embankment
Burning
Metal rending into misshapen form

Next
Riding as if on silk or a cushion of air
With sun shining

In a rhythmic dance to please the kings
A cycle maybe still

But

For now in that secret life
Exists only a

Heart

Gray

There were piles of unseen troubles

That opened this heart’s traveling bag
And the reasons had their reasons
Then new feelings set their flags

I’d never tell someone to do it

But I’d offer them an invite
Understand things can look quite simple
In the softened light of night

Giving off no clue and feeling like they should

But in the bright of morning
Things simple in that moonlight
Have a hard time conforming

To ideas of wrong or right

Still the world is shining
And filled with radiant light
Because those softened evenings

Gave this heart a brand new life

Almost 5

My eyes open in a dark room
The clock is telling me 5 approaches
There to my right I see the outline
Of you

Hair draped across your sleeping face
Gently I pull my left arm from under the covers and brush your hair back
Exposing cheek and ear

My lips catch your cheek as I see your eyes flicker awake
Gently my lips brush your ear

You feel my hand start to knead the muscles in your left hamstring through your winter sleeping clothes
Then reach around between bed and quads to wake the front muscles up too

"Time to go" I whisper

As my hand now works your right leg. The other on your back
Reluctantly you arose yourself off for your morning workout
I slide over into the warmth you left as I hear you getting ready to leave

Breathing deeply your aroma
As I drift back to slumber
Now with dreams of coffee and your return
